IOS 12 public beta released: 4 reasons to try it

Clark ByrdJun 27, 2018

With iOS 12, Apple is also trying to address tech addiction.

Apple has finally released the first iOS 12 public beta. That means anyone willing to take a risk with unfinished software can try out new features such as group FaceTime conversations, less annoying notifications and new Screen Time tools to tell you just how addicted you are to your phone. Apple's iOS public betas, as well as all subsequent updates, are automatically pushed to your device over the air. The point of a beta is to iron out problems. To catch up, Siri has been built with a new feature called Shortcuts, which lets you assign a voice phrase to kick off a chain of automated actions over your device.

You can expect there to be a number of updates released to the beta over the coming weeks and months, and you can leave the beta program if you start to find it too much, or decide that you don't want to use an unfinished version of iOS - just go to the unenrolment page. Users can signup for the Apple Beta Software Program at the link below! Anything else to try? But we usually have to wait a few weeks for the public beta to be released. Apple's Screen Time feature is also present, allowing iPhone and iPad users to get a detailed breakdown of how they use their device and what apps eat up the most time. For one, it will tell you how often you're picking up your phone throughout the day. You can create characters that have your own appearance, choose the skin colour, hairstyle, and also use accessories for your Memoji. Not only can it give you a weekly summary of your usage habits, you can even set time limits on specific apps.

You can get an overview of the other new features in tvOS 12 here.

There are also four new emojis - T. Rex, koala, tiger and ghost - for your expressive needs.

So, what exactly do iPhone owners have to look forward to?

Apple didn't stop there, and added new power features as well.
