Donald Trump still pondering Supreme Court pick as big reveal nears

Trevor BaileyJul 10, 2018

Senate Republicans say whoever the president chooses from this supreme final four will be a victor.

We're just hours away from President Trump making his official announcement from the White House about who will replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

Trump is scheduled to announce a nominee at 9 p.m. Monday.

Distinction: If Trump is looking to make history, Barrett could have some appeal. Let's say it's the four people. "Every one. You can't go wrong".

"Bob Casey was for Judge Hardiman before he was against him, showing yet again that Casey will oppose anything President Trump does, even if it means contradicting himself", Barletta said in a statement. Both are conservative jurists in the mold of Trump's previous Supreme Court pick, Gorsuch.

Trump's approach to naming a new Supreme Court justice has unnerved some Democrats.

"Republicans are holding four lottery tickets, and all of them are winners", said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told NPR's Morning Edition. I am thinking of that person, but I will announce it on prime time TV at the White House.

Kethledge, a former Kennedy law clerk, has sat on the 6th Circuit since 2008 after being nominated by George W. Bush.

He did not reveal his short list. but he is believed to be considering three men and one woman, all of whom have strong conservative credentials. He is an evangelical Christian whose book Lead Yourself First uses President Dwight Eisenhower, primatologist Jane Goodall, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr. and others as examples of "leaders who have used solitude to function more effectively". Leo pointed out that in the 36 years after the decision, only one justice on the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas, has explicitly said that e would overturn Roe v. Wade. He is also former law clerk to Kennedy, as is Kethledge.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal appeals judge last fall - excited social conservatives with her testimony when she was questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings past year. Barrett is popular with social conservatives, but her prospects for being nominated to the post are fading, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Meanwhile, the conservative Judicial Crisis Network said it will launch a $1.4 million ad buy in four states - Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota, and West Virginia - introducing the nominee in a favorable light.

Democrats say McConnell is being hypocritical in moving forward with the nomination. He was the first in his family to go to college, at the University of Notre Dame, then worked as a taxi driver to finance his legal education at Georgetown Law School.

The new justice could sway cases that define the role of religion in public life, determine the scope of gun rights, endorse a more restrictive interpretation of civil rights legislation and further loosen regulatory constraints on big business.

Trump's sister, a retired federal judge, served with Hardiman on the 3rd Circuit and reportedly recommended him for the job.

Current position: Barrett was confirmed by the Senate to a lifetime appointment on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals this past October.
