Tennessee Senators Reserve Judgment On Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh

Conservatives have also criticized Kavanaugh for an initial ruling that, per The Federalist, "wrote a roadmap for saving Obamacare". If confirmed, Trump's choice would solidify the high court's conservative majority and continue the president's push to shift the federal bench to the right.

Jones was among the Democratic lawmakers invited to the announcement at the White House but did not attend.

His tightly orchestrated wind-up announcing Brett Kavanaugh as his latest pick for the Supreme Court, bore all the hallmarks of a matchmaking show, but, unlike some of his other staged events, the hype, the pageantry and the photo op Trump relishes is backed up by serious effect.

He once clerked for Justice Kennedy, the man he would replace and now works as an appeals court judge in Washington DC. Bush later appointed him as his staff secretary, after a stint in the Office of the White House Counsel.

If confirmed, Judge Kavanaugh would join three other Yale Law School graduates now on the Court-Justice Samuel Alito '75, Justice Sonia Sotomayor '79, and Justice Clarence Thomas '74. In the 1990s, Kavanaugh worked on independent counsel Ken Starr's investigation into President Bill Clinton and did not believe in giving the sitting commander in chief a "break".

Agudath Israel of America, an ultra-Orthodox organization, has not yet taken an official position on the nomination, but its Washington director, Rabbi Abba Cohen, called Kavanaugh " a very impressive candidate". "Brett is a brilliant jurist who has faithfully applied the Constitution and laws throughout his 12 years on the D.C. Circuit".

Each of the nine justices has a lifetime appointment.

Here are a few of the issues Kavanaugh has ruled on in recent years.

Kavanaugh still lives in the D.C. area, raising his kids in the Maryland suburbs just miles from the White House.

"My judicial philosophy is straightforward", he said. "A judge must interpret statutes as written and a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent".

Casey has more political cover as Pennsylvania only went for Trump by 1.2 points in 2016. Luther Strange, cutting the GOP's Senate majority to 51-49. Mueller wants to question Trump, and negotiations are ongoing. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., a longtime member of the Judiciary Committee. Now it remains to be seen whether or not his confirmation can actually be wrapped up by the beginning of the court's new term in October.

Leo said, however, that Trump would ultimately succeed at lining up conservative support for anyone he selected.

The president has already begun using the high court vacancy as a rallying cry as he campaigns for Republicans across the country.

If Republicans lose the Senate, they would still have control of the chamber until January. "The most important thing we can do".

The Vice President plans to escort Judge Kavanaugh to the Senate on Tuesday morning to meet with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The president has also been wooing red-state Democrats as a kind of insurance policy.

Republicans will target three Democrats facing re-election in conservative states where Trump won big majorities in the 2016 election - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of in - to support Kavanaugh.

Trump also met with Republican Sens. Democrats plan to pressure two moderate Senate Republicans, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, to oppose the nomination. Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer earlier on Monday said Trump's nominee should be obligated to make his or her views clear on matters like the Roe ruling.

"Montanans have a lot on the line with this next Supreme Court Justice, so I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put politics aside and do what's best for this nation", Tester said. While that argument won't sway Republicans, their strategy could stiffen Democratic resolve to oppose the nominee.

Like the other eight justices on the court, Kavanaugh has an Ivy League law degree, spending his undergraduate and law school years at Yale.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would be be replacing his old boss; like Justice Gorsuch, Kavanaugh clerked for Justice Kennedy back in the day. McConnell had said the victor of the presidential election should make the choice. The White House hopes Kyl's close ties to Senate Republicans will help smooth the path for confirmation.
