Trump's Supreme Court Pick Woos Senators Amid Partisan Storm

Trevor BaileyJul 12, 2018

And so did the Senate's other two most endangered Democrats, Sens. Fox News was a close second to CBS previous year when Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch in a similar prime-time show, but that was on a winter night when many CBS viewers were probably anticipating a new episode of "NCIS".

The Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens.

Maine's Collins and Alaska's Murkowski are among the few Republicans in the Senate who are typically described as "moderate" in the mainstream media.

The possible nominees, "will rank as one of the great insults to the Supreme Court in its history", railed Kennedy.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, left, shakes hands with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill in Washington, July 10, 2018.

"The Democrats who are participating in this charade know this is bad for the republic, but they've just so politicized the process that they can't get out of the cycle", Sasse told CBN News. Collins has said she will not vote for a nominee who would overturn the Supreme Court's landmark 1973 decision, Roe versus Wade, that legalized abortion nationwide.

Both of Michigan's U.S. Senators - Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow - are Democrats, and both said they have serious concerns with Kavanaugh's nomination. But ultimately, they caved into party pressure and voted for it-and they will be under enormous pressure from Trump and McConnell to vote for Kavanaugh. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.). Pennsylvania is not among the ten states with a pre-Roe abortion ban still on the books, and pro-abortion Democrat Gov. Tom Wolf has said he would veto a new ban, so there is now no abortion prohibition Zappala would be called to enforce. "This is a nominee who is going to be incredibly popular".

American Bridge's work represents another piece in a growing umbrella of groups on both sides of the Kavanaugh nomination - operations that combined plan to spend millions of dollars on television and digital advertising, rallying grassroots to support or oppose Kavanaugh's nomination and defending - or in the case of American Bridge, attempting to sink - his nomination.

First, to the big issue on many minds: If confirmed, what could Kavanaugh do to abortion rights? "Where we have leverage is with senators who call themselves pro-life".

Jones was among the Democratic lawmakers invited to the announcement at the White House but did not attend.

"We have a president whose statements and policies are rooted in racism".

While Kavanaugh was meeting with senators, environmental groups slammed his record on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, which handles many regulatory cases.

"There will be the usual attempts to sully his reputation, not only in the Senate but outside the Senate, but he'll be able to handle it, and I have every confidence he'll be confirmed", Hatch said.

Elizabeth Warren, Democratic senator for MA. Even if it doesn't, assuming Collins runs again, pushback will make her decision on Kavanaugh an issue for her 2020 reelection campaign. "We need the American people to weigh in".

"I don't think anyone is going to overturn Roe versus Wade".

But Democrats in the Senate and liberals in the outside groups have called for a higher standard, saying such commitments can no longer be trusted given Trump's judicial selection process.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who engineered the court's lurch to the right when he refused to hold hearings for Merrick Garland, said the public can see through Democrats' trickery.

In his dissent, Kavanaugh wrote that it came as a "surprise" that the EPA did not consider costs and said the agency's failure to do so was "unreasonable", citing significant costs for industry to meet the regulations. This would be risky for many Americans, but especially the disability community, which has seen expanded access to care under this legislation.
