Buck-a-beer coming soon in Ford's Ontario

George McgeeAug 10, 2018

Progressive conservative party of Ontario plans to reduce the price of beer to one dollar, but not to reduce the amount of tax paid by consumers per unit of product.

In order to encourage producers to lower their prices, Ford said his government would launch the buck-a-beer challenge, which would offer promotional programs, in-store displays and advertising to those who sell their beer at the minimum price. "You couldn't be more tone deaf on this subject".

The minimum price - which was hiked from $1 to C$1.25 by the previous Liberal government in 2008 - will apply to beers that have less than 5.6% alcohol content.

Ford also promised to allow the sale of beer, wine and spirits in corner stores across the province.

The move is voluntary for the province's 260 brewers, and has raised questions about how many will actually implement cheaper prices given higher costs since beer was last allowed to be sold at $1 - a decade ago. He said the change will be made by August 27, just in time for the Labour Day long weekend.

Even a brand like Laker, which once prided itself on its $1-a-bottle price point, is retailing at $1.95 for a 473 ml can. Many Ontarians took to Twitter Tuesday to voice their discontent with the "buck-a-beer" announcement, particularly in light of the government's recent cancellation of a Basic Income Pilot project. Citing increased taxes, higher costs for ingredients and labour and new US tariffs on aluminum, Scott Simmons, president of Ontario Craft Brewers, said he doesn't expect any of his organization's members to offer beer at $1. "I just don't think this is something our membership would ever entertain", Mr. Simmons said.

Eric Portelance, who co-owned Halo Brewery in Toronto until earlier this year, said the buck-a-beer challenge is "insulting" to brewers and distorts the market by devaluing their product.

"We are not reducing the tax level", says Vic Fedeli... which essentially says "we are encouraging breweries to eat the cost to participate in the "challenge". You're going to get what you pay for".

Muskoka Brewery was one of the companies that declined to participate today.

The move will have no effect on the province's almost $600-million in revenue from beer and alcohol taxes, Finance Minister Vic Fedeli said.

"I believe that we can pull this off".

The price of beer cans has jumped in recent months because of the escalating trade war with the United States which has slapped a 10-per-cent tariff on aluminium.
