I’m ‘Looking Into’ 3D-Printed Plastic Guns

President Donald Trump, in a tweet early Tuesday, said he was "looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public" and had already spoken to the NRA about it. Trump said the prospect "doesn't seem to make such sense", though it wasn't clear if he knew that his own State Department had reached a settlement last month with the designer who first published downloadable instructions. Already spoke to NRA, doesn't seem to make much sense!' OR is joining a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of State to prevent a Texas company from posting designs for guns that can be made on 3-D printers.

The 3D-blueprints were removed from the site in 2013 because the government said it violated global regulation laws, but eventually surrendered, concluding 3D-gun blueprints count as constitutionally protected speech.

Guttenberg and others worry easy access to plastic guns is a public-safety issue and would sidestep current regulations, providing criminals and terrorists with "guns that can't be flagged by metal detectors, don't have serial numbers to trace and don't require the usual background checks".

Ferguson is the lead attorney general in the multistate lawsuit that was filed in federal courts in seven other states, including NY and OR, along with the District of Columbia. Lisa Murkowski tweeted, linking to a news story on the guns.

Kerry Stevenson, editor and founder of the 3D printing blog Fabbaloo, said the level of alarm over the release of the 3D-printed gun designs is unwarranted.

Lasnik said the blueprints' publication could cause irreparable harm to U.S. citizens.

However, according to the Associated Press, around 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, a Federal judged issued a temporary restraining order to stop the release of the blueprints online. He also says these D-I-Y guns aren't as powerful as some think.

"It's outrageous. If we were at a bar, my language would be stronger, I assure you", Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said.

They have created a plastic 3D-printable handgun called the "Liberator", a machine called the "Ghost Gunner" with which home-made metal gun parts can be constructed, and amassed other digital gun files.

The measure is meant to ensure that even guns primarily made of plastic can be discovered by metal detectors.

With more than 4,500 downloads as of Tuesday afternoon, the most popular blueprint on the site appeared to be for "the Liberator", a single-shot.380-caliber handgun made nearly entirely of 3D-printed plastic.

Some experts have sought to downplay the fears of 3D-printed weapons, emphasizing that 3D printers are expensive and weapons produced in them quickly disintegrate if used. They don't have magazines that allow the usual nine or 15 rounds to be carried; instead, they usually hold a bullet or two and then must be manually loaded afterward.

"This is an imminent threat to public safety and violates the law".

Meanwhile, Defense Distributed agreed to block temporarily Pennsylvania residents from downloading the plans after state officials went to federal court in Philadelphia on Sunday seeking an emergency order. But due to the pending legal battle, Wilson has chose to abide by the cease-and-desist orders, and will not make DEFCAD available in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Los Angeles.
