Kerala Floods: Number Of Deaths Rises To 29, Army Rescues 54 Tourists

An Inter-ministerial Central team is also visiting the flood-affected area and the Army support is being mobilized from Bengaluru, the statement said.

Not only that, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) also opened all the five shutters of the Cheruthony dam in order to release the excess inflow of the water deposited in the catchment areas of the reservoir from the past couple of days.

At least 58 people were killed by flooding and house collapses in northern Uttar Pradesh state two weeks ago.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, "24 dams have been opened so far, which is unprecedented and is telling of the seriousness of the situation".

With water levels rising in various dams and reaching nearly maximum capacity, shutters of at least 22 reservoirs in the state have been opened to drain out excess water. The release of the Idamalayar dam resulted in the flooding of low laying districts as well. The Southern Naval Command at Kochi has rescued people stranded in the flood-hit areas, as part of the Indian Navy's "Operation Madad" for the rain and landslide-ravaged state.

Due to heavy rains and resultant floods in Kozhikode and Waynad districts, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been moved to Kozhikode.

Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam said he discussed the flood situation in Kerala with Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who assured him of all possible help. On Friday, the Navy has set up two teams in Wayanad aiding the state in the rescue operations at Aluva and a stand-by team in Kalamassery. The first shutters were opened on Thursday after 26 years.

Now, as per weathermen at Skymet Weather, moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue over the state of Kerala for another 24 hours, thereafter, rain intensity will reduce significantly, however, on and off rains will continue.

An alert has been issued to people living in the downstream areas and on the banks of Cheruthoni and Periyar rivers. "The water that came down the five floodgates, barring at Cheruthoni, has not caused any major crisis", added Mani, who is monitoring the situation from here.

The coastal state, famed for its pristine palm-lined beaches and tea plantations, is battered by the annual monsoon every year but the rains have been particularly severe this season.

Meanwhile, the water level at Idukki has touched 2401.60 ft at 1 pm against a full reservoir level of 2403 feet. Of the five gates in the dam, one was opened on Thursday for a trial run and three on Friday morning.

Access to many of these places are hard and is affecting the rescue operations.

As the water level continued to rise in the reservoir, two more shutterd were opened later.

Shibu, a relief official told UCANEWS on Friday that almost 200 army soldiers joined rescue workers in the worst-hit Ayannkulu, Idukki and Wayanad areas.
