Lewis Hamilton reveals how Mercedes can beat Ferrari to F1 title

Justin GreeneAug 02, 2018

The Ferrari driver was third at the Hungaroring, one place behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel as Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton took a second successive victory. Hamilton's victory was a near-perfect send-off for him and Mercedes as the F1 circus set off for a four-week closedown that will end when the teams return to action in Belgium at the end of August.

Then, after he'd cooled down, Bottas backtracked on his earlier remarks, saying on social media he in fact wouldn't seek a meeting with his boss over being labelled a "wingman". "I am really, really happy to be going into the break with back-to-back wins, and that boost will last a long time for our team, and that is encouraging for everyone".

"I don't believe there's ever a moment that you've got your hands on the title or the trophy".

SEBASTIAN VETTEL was unhappy to see Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes a full 17 seconds up the road in Hungary and stretching the championship gap to 24 points, but it could have been much worse.

Team boss Wolff said: "It wasn't realistic for us to win".

Bottas, who lost part of his front wing, dropped to fifth after a late collision with Daniel Ricciardo, who overtook the Finn on the final lap in his second shot at the wounded Mercedes vehicle.

Also in this season, he set the record for the most pole positions in a debut season (6), he notched up the most consecutive podium finishes starting from debut (9), as well as setting the record for becoming the youngest championship leader at 22 years and 126 days at the 2007 Spanish Grand Prix.

Earlier in the season, a mechanic's leg was broken by the Finnish driver's auto following an unsafe pit release at the Bahrain GP. He was passing him around the outside of Turn 1 when Bottas locked up again and clattered into the side of Ricciardo's Red Bull, damaging its sidepod in the process. "Perhaps the word wingman doesn't do it justice, but he drove a sensational race and helped Lewis to extend his lead", he said.

Valtteri Bottas and his Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff have reconciled the misunderstanding of their comments about his work as a "sensational wingman" following Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.

"We came here knowing Ferrari would be really quick this weekend, so to come out with these points, we'll definitely take it as a bonus", said Hamilton.

Lap 52 - VSC phase ends. "I was lucky the auto was not broken and I could carry on".

"Qualifying was a very important day for us", said Hamilton, referring to the fact Ferrari was expected to be quicker.

He said: 'Valtteri's race was the flawless wingman's race, and I don't mean in championship terms.

"We have won five races, we are ahead of the Ferraris which eight-nine races in really turned up the heat, and to come away with two [consecutive] wins is a great show of strength in depth".
