Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said on Twitter it had rescued more than 3,000 people from the Gilis by Monday evening and many more were yet to be evacuated.

The spokesperson for the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a press conference that another 1,467 people were admitted to hospitals owing to the injuries they sustained in the Sunday quake.

Almost 1,500 people have been hospitalized with serious injuries and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

On Wednesday, the rescue workers using heavy equipment have resumed search for survivors in the mosque, now reduced to a pile of concrete and metal bars, with its towering green dome folded in on itself.

In the north of Lombok, the earthquake's epicentre, rescuers were holding out hope that more people would be pulled alive from the wreckage of thousands of buildings that collapsed. Water, food and medical supplies were being distributed from trucks. Thousands of people sat on roadsides outside their houses under blue makeshift tents and tarps, too afraid to stay inside because of aftershocks or their homes now uninhabitable. Emergency services were still working in the area to locate survivors and recover bodies. "But they're working too slowly", said Masin, the brother-in-law, as ambulances passed by, sirens wailing. Disaster agency officials said.

"We will not give up until we pull him out of this rubble".

BNPB had previously put the number of dead at 105, including two on the western neighbouring island of Bali, which also felt the 6.9 magnitude quake.

All tourists in Indonesia's quake-stricken resort island of Lombok, including 39 Chinese citizens, had been evacuated to safe areas by late Monday, according to China's consulate general in Denpasar, Bali.

"We slept in a bungalow until another quake hit us at midnight and then we moved to the beach", she said.

Government has also engaged national airlines to provide extra flights from Lombok for the foreign tourists with Lombok airport is opened 24 hours to facilitate more frequent flights. Many hotels closed because of damage but some allowed travelers to camp in their lobbies.

"That was my first experience with the quake and it was really awful", said Lize Reert, a Belgian woman among the several thousand who fled Gili Trawangan.

Rebecca McConnell, 26, was on nearby Bali when the natural disaster struck and spoke to the Irish Independent about the "sheer terror" she felt as Sunday evening's quake hit.

Indonesia's Foreign Ministry has opened a call center for foreign tourists and their relatives following a fatal quake that hit West Nusa Tenggara on Sunday.
