Mexico airliner crashes and burns, but all aboard survive

Initial reports suggested that 97 passengers and four crew were on board.

The mid-sized jet was nearly full, with 97 passengers and four crew members, when it came down at around 4pm local time, Mr Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, Mexico's minister for communications and transportation, wrote on Twitter. The state's Secretariat of Health confirmed that at least 18 people were taken to a local hospital, where there was no word on their conditions.

The plane was carrying 97 passengers and four crew members and had just taken off when it went down and skidded to a stop.

It made an emergency landing about 10km from the state capital's airport shortly after taking off, Alejandro Cardoza, a spokesman for the state civil protection agency, said on local television.

Aeromexico said the incident involved an Embraer 190 plane with a capacity of 100 passengers on a flight from Durango to Mexico City.

Embraer, the Brazilian maker of the aircraft, stands ready to assist the Mexican authorities in their investigations, the company said.

The President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto said he gave instructions to the military to help in the rescue operations in Durango and hoped everyone on board was alright.

"We confirm that there were no fatalities in the accident of flight AM2431", Durango Governor Jose Aispuro said via Twitter.

Its left wing then touched the ground and its engines broke off, he said.

Aeromexico said it was working with authorities to provide medical attention to the 101 people aboard the flight. "The pilot suffered the most serious injury, a cervical lesion that required surgery". But they agreed the plane was trying to take off during a storm, with some describing marble-sized hail. Lines of ambulances are seen waiting at the site. "It happened all immediately in what felt like one moment", Garcia said to BuzzFeed News.

Embraer, the plane's manufacturer, said in a statement that technicians were sent to the crash site and that it was "aware of the accident".

"You start gaining speed and as soon as you start taking off all of the sudden the plane starts struggling and it's getting hit with hail", said Herrera, who was visiting the city of Durango for the baptism of his cousin's baby.
