Rudy Giuliani: Chicago Murders 'Direct Result' of 'Democratic Rule for Decades'

Casey GreeneAug 07, 2018

Two people were killed and 28 were wounded between midnight and 3 a.m., including at least 13 teenagers.

Last week, dozens of protesters temporarily shut down the Windy City's iconic Lake Shore Drive to express their outrage over Chicago's endemic gun violence and call for Emanuel's resignation of the city's mayor.

Johnson said the police department can not reduce shootings without help from residents identifying the shooters, many of whom are repeat offenders.

The Chicago Tribune, which has been tracking shooting statistics, reported earlier this month that shootings in the city have declined, with 533 fewer shootings as of August 1 than the same time in 2017.

On Sunday, police pointed out that - despite the weekend violence - murders in the city are down 25% so far this year. Giuliani also falsely claimed that Chicago had "63 murders this weekend".

Police said in some of the incidents shooters sprayed bullets indiscriminately into large groups in rival territories, where people had gathered for outdoor events.

Chicago saw fewer homicides in 2016 than in 2017; 650 and 771 respectively. The former New York City mayor also tweeted his support for Chicago's former superintendent, Garry McCarthy, referring to him as "Jerry" and calling him a "policing genius".

Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller blamed much of the weekend bloodshed on gang members during a Sunday press conference, describing the shootings as both random and targeted. "We will not. I promise you that we will not be defeated", he told CBS Chicago.

Waller said the summer heat brings crowds out to the streets, particularly when violence has taken place.

Chicago police held a news conference Sunday, Aug. 5 to talk about shooting incidents that left 44 people wounded, and killed at least five. In one shooting in Chicago's Gresham neighborhood, eight people were shot - including four teenage girls.

"Chicago's political leadership - Emanuel and City Council - won't address the poverty that fuels the frustration, anger and self-hatred which leads to violence", Acree said. Johnson react to weekend violenceMayor Rahm Emanuel said Monday morning he visited Stroger and Mt. Sinai hospitals to thank those that treated the victims of the violence.

The police chief emphasized an oft-repeated criticism by city officials that repeat gun offenders receive sentences that are too short and are able to quickly return to the streets to commit more crimes - believing they will not face serious consequences. "We are a better city".
