S.Sudan foes to sign power-sharing agreement on Sunday

Sudanese foreign minister Al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed announced that the holdout opposition groups have finally agreed to sign the deal.

The agreement outlines guidelines on power-sharing and governance, including settling boundary disputes, which will be guided by a Boundary Commission, and provides for an avenue for the people of South Sudan to participate in a referendum if need be to settle those disputes.

Kiir and his bitter rival Riek Machar were in neighbouring Sudan to sign the deal, under which the rebel leader is set to return to a unity government as the first of five vice presidents.

South Sudan's almost five year conflict began after Kiir accused his sacked vice president Machar of plotting a coup against him in 2013.

Still, Ahmed said the parties disagree on the power-sharing at the level of local governments, but they are determined to solve the issue before the final signing of the document on August 5.

It also stipulated that the transitional cabinet would be composed of 35 ministers from both the government and the opposition, including 20 ministers from the government, and nine from the Machar-led Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). The transitional Parliament will comprise 550 lawmakers, 332 from Kiir's side and 128 from Machar's faction.

Sudan helped broker the agreement.

A similar arrangement, however, fell apart in July 2016 when fighting erupted in the capital, Juba, and Machar fled the country.

"In fact, such an agreement may sow the seeds of another cycle of conflict", it said. "Where will I get this?" "So there are so many things need to be done".

President Kenyatta appealed to the political leadership in South Sudan to secure the future of the region by commencing implementation of the Agreement.

The conflict has also been driven by ethnic divisions - Kiir and Machar come from Dinka and Nuer ethnic groups respectively.

The day before, the President, after meeting with the Sudanese Foreign Minister, told the press that he is committed to the agreement to share power and promised that it will not collapse like the previous ones.
