Seattle judge blocks release of blueprints for 3D-printed guns

Defense Distributed made national headlines by developing gun computer files that enable consumers to create fully operational firearms with a 3-D printer.

On Tuesday evening, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against Defense Distributed, forcing it to halt downloads of the files.

On Monday, eight states filed a federal lawsuit to block the deal with Defense Distributed.

Also, Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch of Boca Raton, whose district includes Parkland, introduced the "Untraceable Firearms Act of 2018" to ban 3-D printed guns and other made-at-home firearms.

"We don't agree with President Trump very much", Washington state Assistant Attorney General Jeff Rupert told Lasnik, "but when he tweeted 'this doesn't make much sense, ' that's something we agree with".

But he added the fact the legislation includes the phrase "it shall be unlawful for any person to intentionally publish" "should attract the attention of anyone who's concerned about our First Amendment and other constitutional rights".

The president expressed doubt, saying "doesn't seem to make much sense!".

An overwhelming majority of voters say it should be illegal to provide people with blueprints that can be downloaded to print a 3D gun, according to a new American Barometer poll.

Defense Distributed's website said it would publish the files on Wednesday but blueprints for seven guns already were available for download.

"Any firearm built using 3D printed parts must still comply with all local, state and federal laws", the CCDL said.

Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence called the restraining order "a strong step and a clear victory for the entire gun safety movement" in a statement.

The second measure is meant to ensure that even guns primarily made of plastic can be discovered by metal detectors. "But it's your administration that has allowed this to happen because after years of winning this issue in courts at every stage of litigation, the administration has surrendered to the crazed demands of a self-described anarchist who is going to put this up on the Internet".

"Two federal courts agreed with the federal government and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the case, instead of continuing to defend the lawsuit that they were winning at every stage... the Trump administration abruptly reversed course", Ferguson said on Monday.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Defense Distributed director Cody Wilson described current 3D-printed guns as "mostly curiosities", and said that the "big" and "bulky" characteristics of the weapons would help identify them.

"They are undetectable, they are untraceable", said Sen.

The expert also said the guns would also not work properly and that it would take a high-end printer to make a 3D printed gun efficient.

'I am looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public, ' he said.

"Republicans say they want to keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals, with this settlement, violent criminals can manufacture firearms".
