Twitter drags Trump-backed Florida candidate for racist comment

If elected, Gillum would be Florida's first black governor. The outgoing Governor Rick Scott, also a Republican, won his primary to challenge the incumbent Senator Bill Nelson (D-Florida) in November.

Gillum stunned pollsters and much of the punditocracy by defeating four rivals to win the Democratic primary with 34 percent of the vote. Gillum himself ended up scheduled for a meeting in Costa Rica in 2016 with someone who was, unbeknownst to him, an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent. Who's the person, in other words, who's watching interviews with Gillum and thinking, "He's black, and I don't like that, and he's also ultra-left-wing, which I really don't like - but can I really pull the lever for DeSantis in good conscience if he doesn't call Gillum a monkey"? "To characterize it as anything else is absurd", Lawson said.

Gillum never tried to win over centrist Democrats in his quest for the gubernatorial nomination - defying the general political wisdom in the country's largest purple state.

"There's an eagerness to immediately consolidate behind the Democratic nominee", Smith said.

Colin Hackley/ZUMA Press/NewscomIs the GOP simply the party of Donald Trump now, or is there still room for more moderate, establishment-backed candidates?

For all the excitement around Gillum with the progressive base - and there is plenty of reason for them to be excited; just take a look at his victory speech Tuesday night - his win carries a warning sign, too. Both Florida and Georgia appear to be flawless stand-ins for a national contest two years from now that will probably pit Trump against what will not only likely be a liberal but also possibly a woman and/or a minority - especially if Democrats pick a relative newcomer like Sens.

Greg Gutfeld said you have to "suspend belief" to think that DeSantis meant the term as a racial slight and not as a "verb" to carelessly hurt something.

Asked in a Washington Post interview about the chance to be Florida's first black governor, Gillum said, "I'm trying to be the next governor of Florida".

Gillum sounded a note of unity at his victory party, saying the campaign was "about every single last one of us".

He told CNN: "I actually believe that Florida and its rich diversity are going to be looking for a governor who's going to bring us together, not divide us".

In just four of 36 races Tuesday night, a female Republican candidate emerged as the preferred choice of GOP primary voters.

The gloves are already off. Mr. Trump called Gillum a "failed socialist" on Twitter Wednesday.

Tallahassee has had one of the Florida's highest crime rates in recent years though it has been going down. Gillum replied, "No, I'm a Democrat". He was elected mayor in 2014. He's a gifted public speaker who did well in debates, often receiving the most applause, but the FBI is investigating Tallahassee city hall for corruption. The FBI has been sniffing around City Hall in Tallahassee, where Andrew Gillum is mayor, for years.

"This investigation has centered around an individual", said Gillum said on MSNBC.

Gillum has aligned with the left of his party on federal issues including Medicare for All, which would provide the federal health care plan to everyone.
