Weed killer linked to cancer found in kids' cereal, oatmeal

Lab tests conducted by the left-leaning Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit advocacy group that specializes in toxic chemicals and corporate accountability, indicated nearly three-fourths of the 45 food products tested detected high levels of glyphosate, which has been identified as a "probable carcinogen" by the World Health Organization in 2015. They found glyphosate, the active ingredient in the Monsanto weed-killer RoundUp, in all but two samples.

Glyphosate is classified as a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization and was listed past year as a chemical known to cause cancer by California.

This study said Cheerios and Quaker Oats made the list of potential cereals and oats with high levels of the chemical.

The report comes days after Monsanto was ordered to award $289 million to a terminally ill man who claimed that excessive exposure and use of Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Glyphosate rich Roundup is the most popular and widely used pesticide in the U.S.

"We don't know a lot about the effects of glyphosate on children", said Lowry, "And essentially we're just kind of throwing it at them".

EWG tested more than a dozen brands of oat-based foods to give Americans information about dietary exposures that government regulators are keeping secret. Most experts in the field agree saying there's very little evidence that glyphosate causes cancer or any other health problems. Quaker Dinosaur Eggs, Brown Sugar, Instant Oatmeal contained as much as 780 parts per billion in one sample.

However, EWG President Ken Cook told The Guardian that the EPA has a "lawless" nature under the Trump administration and that companies should "step up" to reduce glyphosate in food to a level below what's mandated.

In a statement to FOX Business regarding the report, a General Mills' spokesperson says, "Our products are safe and without questions they meet regulatory safety levels".

Monsanto has frequently disputed the allegations that Roundup's glyphosate causes cancer, and it told CBS on August 15 that "glyphosate does not cause cancer" and "has a more than 40-year history of safe use".

USA farmers spray about 200m pounds of Roundup each year on their crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat and oats.

Still, after weeks of testimony from several experts on both sides, a jury concluded that Monsanto's Roundup and Ranger Pro products presented a "substantial danger" to terminally ill 46-year-old Dewayne "Lee" Johnson, who became sick after using the spray for more than two years.

Despite the complaints filed against the company, Monsanto still argued that the EPA had consistently supported the safe and effective use of glyphosate.

You can read the report here, and see which products tested high for the herbicide. "And depending on weather patterns it could drift into their farms and get onto their foods", she said. Their daily glyphosate intake is estimated at 230 times the 160ppb benchmark, according to EWG.

In December 2017, the federal Environmental Protection Agency issued a draft human health risk assessment that said glyphosate was most likely not carcinogenic to humans.
