White House chief of staff to stick around for now

Almost a month after Porter's resignation, Kelly admitted that he mishandled his response to the allegations against Porter.

The president congratulated Kelly on his one-year anniversary on Monday during a swearing-in ceremony of the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie.

In the two weeks leading up to Trump's disruptive swing through Europe, senior aides predicted that Kelly had days or hours left.

A retired Marine general, Kelly replaced Reince Priebus in the role. Today we celebrate his first full year as @WhiteHouse Chief of Staff!

Trump had consulted with advisers about whom he should pick as Kelly's successor - and considered Nick Ayers, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, and Mick Mulvaney, who heads the Office of Management and Budget.

But Trump has made a decision to stick with Kelly - for now, at least.

Kelly's tenure was marred by his handling of the domestic abuse allegations against staff secretary Rob Porter, who resigned in February.

Unwilling to cede control to a powerful chief of staff again, Trump mused aloud to confidants that he might leave the job open, according to the official.

But relations between the two have improved in recent months amid signs that Kelly plans to stay on, aides said.

"He comes down for the day, and whatever he saw on Fox and Friends, he schedules meetings based on that", said one former White House official. It's a one-man show and no one is getting in the way of Trump's delusion that he's nailing it on a daily basis. "He's a wonderful man", Mr. Trump added at the time.
