Whitmer Wins Democratic Primary In Governor's Race

Casey GreeneAug 11, 2018

Former legislative leader Gretchen Whitmer will lead Michigan's first all-female statewide ticket in the November election, winning the Democratic nomination for governor and pitting her against Republican state Attorney General Bill Schuette, an ally of President Donald Trump.

Schuette, like Kobach, was also endorsed by Trump for governor.

The 46-year-old from East Lansing appealed for party unity, saying she was proud to have run against a diverse field of candidates that included Dr. Abdul El-Sayed - Detroit's liberal ex-health director who hoped to become the nation's first Muslim governor - and big-spending entrepreneur Shri Thanedar, an immigrant from India.

In the Republican battle, Schuette - a veteran politician who has served in Congress, the Legislature and as an appellate judge - emphasized his endorsement from Trump and a proposal to cut the state income tax.

The state's Democratic nomination went to State Sen.

Party activists will choose attorney general and secretary of state nominees at a convention in late August, and Schuette said Wednesday his running mate will be a woman. "You have to understand how things work to get things done", said Karen Rozanski, 67, of St. Clair Shores, who voted for Whitmer.

Almost 2.2 million votes were cast, a 28 percent spike over the 1.7 million in 2002.

Michigan, where Republicans have controlled state government for 7½ years, is an important gauge of whether Democrats can make gains in the upper Midwest after Trump won the state in 2016.

"I need you to vote for both - they are very important to our great agenda", Trump said in the call.

"I like balanced budgets". Laura Kelly, who defeated four other candidates in the primary. And either Republican business executive Lena Epstein or Democratic former auto bailout chief of staff Haley Stevens will succeed a retiring congressman in suburban Detroit.
