Politicians across party lines have expressed dissatisfaction with the almost seven percent increase in murders in South Africa.

Announcing the murder statistic - a record high - police minister Bheki Cele said the number is close to that of a war zone, with nearly 57 people killed on an average day.

South African Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, has revealed that 20,336 murders were recorded in the country from 2017 to 2018 period.

The police station where most murders were reported is Nyanga in the Western Cape, followed by Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police Minister Bheki Cele, who also chairs the committee, and National Commissioner Khehla Sitole are both scheduled to host a briefing in the city this afternoon.

It comes hard on the heels of bleak crime statistics released on Tuesday‚ indicating that serious crimes‚ including murder‚ attempted murder and sexual offences‚ were increasing.

According to the statistics, 20 336 murder cases were reported, showing a 6.9% increase - a spike of 1 320 murder reports compared to the previous year.

"This demonstrates that they are aware of the evidence and willing to do things differently to reduce it (murder)", said Newham.

Cele earlier told MPs this translated into an average of 57 people being killed in South Africa every day.

Members of Parliament have called for strategic interventions from the police calling for more specialised units are needed to target scourges, such as gangsterism and taxi-related violence.

Murder is up. Rape is up.

Last year' stats showed that murders had increased to just below 19 000.

Business robberies have decreased by 3.1 percent from a year ago.

"About 10,000 police officers which means we do have a problem".

Sekhukhune said there were 62 reported crimes that were categorised as farm murders.

"The increase of 6.9 per cent year on year from the last financial year point to the ineffectiveness of interventions implemented by the South African Police Service".

Cash-in-transit robberies have increased by 56.6 percent since the previous reporting period.
