Bob Woodward 'Fear: Trump In The White House' Bombshell Revelations

Sheri SchwartzSep 05, 2018

Bob Woodward is a titan of American journalism, as he is one half of the famed "Woodward and Bernstein" duo who helped bring down Richard Nixon. Now it's Donald Trump's turn under the microscope.

Mr Woodward writes that Mr Trump was presiding over "a nervous breakdown of the executive power of the most powerful country in the world".

Here's a look at some of the blockbuster revelations that have emerged so far from early excerpts of Woodward's book.

What I take away from all this is that Mattis is in a hard position. The United States remains in NAFTA, through it's negotiating new terms with Canada and Mexico.

Woodward describes these acts as "no less than an administrative coup d'etat".

Trump's former lawyer in the Russian Federation probe, John Dowd, is said to have doubted Trump's ability to avoid perjuring himself should he be interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller. "Sounds like this is going to be a bad one".

It went disastrously. Dowd told Trump: "Don't testify". And change few minds.

It alleges Trump called Defense Secretary James Mattis to say, "Let's f-ing kill him" after Syrian leader Bashar Assad launched a chemical attack on civilians.

"Evidently talking about Donald Trump for two years has made my mouth old", the Late Show host said of his noticeably white beard and non-white hair. Mattis subsequently informed a senior aide, "We're not going to do any of that".

Woodward says administration officials were also concerned when the president asked for plans for a pre-emptive military strike on North Korea during the height of his feud with Kim Jong-un.

At another point he went on to attack his generals about the war in Afghanistan, saying, "You should be killing guys".

The Washington Post, which obtained an advance copy of the book by the veteran chronicler of modern presidents, reported Tuesday that Woodward describes Trump manically pressing his staff for actions that could lead to major conflict - leaving them little choice but to disregard his orders. But according to Woodward, he quietly saved the South Korea-U.S. trade agreement, known as Korus, when he in 2017 removed a "letter off Trump's desk" that the president planned to sign that would have ordered a U.S. withdrawal.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mattis dismissed the book as "a uniquely Washington brand of literature" and said the contemptuous words about Trump attributed to him "were never uttered by me or in my presence".

Woodward explained his method of reporting to Trump, including meeting with White House sources and getting documentation. Then-White House chief economic adviser Gary Cohn recounted how, on two separate occasions, he plucked letters off Trump's desk that would have taken the US out of important worldwide agreements.

Mueller replied, "John, I understand", according to Woodward. "You're past your prime". "He just scurries around". And, not surprisingly, Trump was even more scathing about Attorney General Jeff Sessions in private than he is public. "He's this dumb southerner", Trump said, according to the book.

"This was no longer a presidency".

And the chaos inside the White House has an effect on policy. "This is a man being who he is".

FILE - Lawyer John Dowd exits Manhattan Federal Court in New York, May 11, 2011. In addition, several top officials quoted in the book have already left the administration. "I'm busy. But I don't mind talking to you". I told you he was a goddamn dumbbell. I don't want you doing any more negotiations. Trump apparently never noticed.

But comments like that don't end with Kelly.

"The idea I ever called the president an idiot is not true", he said in a statement issued by the White House.
