Brazilian Front-Runner Jair Bolsonaro Stabbed on Campaign Trail

Casey GreeneSep 08, 2018

O Globo cites a source in the campaign who described the stab wound as "superficial" and expressed optimism about Bolsonaro's ability to recover and continue campaigning.

Video footage shown on TV from the event showed Bolsonaro clutching his stomach and grimacing as he sat atop supporters' shoulders. Local media said he was rounded on and beaten by Bolsonaro supporters. "He lost a lot of blood, arrived at the hospital. nearly dead".

Mr Bolsonaro, a retired army captain, is a controversial figure who has enraged many Brazilians with extreme comments, but has a devout following among conservative voters.

A suspect, identified by authorities as 40-year-old Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, was arrested within seconds.

In the hours following the attack in Juiz de Fora, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of Rio de Janeiro, Bolsonaro supporters predicted it would carry him to the presidency.

Environmentalist candidate Marina Silva said the attack must be investigated and the perpetrators punished.

During an event later in the nation's capital, Brazil's President Michel Temer said that "the intolerance that there's been in Brazilian society is unacceptable".

It is the most unpredictable election since Brazil's return to democracy in 1985 with a highly splintered field of candidates.

Bolsonaro likely needs to spend at least a week in the hospital and would be unable to campaign for at least three weeks - or just before the October 7 first-round vote.

Bolsonaro is the frontrunner in the first-round of the presidential elections next month with 22 percent support, according to a poll published by the Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics (Ibope), a private media company in Brazil. However, despite his seemingly high popularity, Bolsonaro have so far failed to form any alliance with any major political forces in Brazil so far.

Despite being a congressman since 1991, Bolsonaro is running as an outsider ready to upend the establishment. He has been fined, and even faced charges, for derogatory statements toward women, blacks and gays.

Other candidates quickly denounced the attack.

The attack comes at a time of increasingly heated rhetoric, and sometimes violence, related to campaigns and candidates. Fernando Haddad, the likely substitute for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has 6 percent.

Bolsonaro, like Lula da Silva, is revered by some but despised by others, reflecting the stark political polarization now gripping the South American nation. In March, while da Silva was on a campaign tour in southern Brazil before his imprisonment, gunshots hit buses in his caravan.

Demonstrators react next to a drawing of Rio de Janeiro city councillor Marielle Franco, who was shot dead earlier this year.
