Calls mount to avert 'massacre' in Syria's Idlib

The UN says almost three million people live in Idlib and global concern has risen in recent days over a threatened regime assault to oust rebels and jihadists from the province and surrounding areas.

On Tuesday, the United Nations peace envoy for Syria urged Erdogan and Russia's President Vladimir Putin to speak on the phone before Friday's summit.

Regime troops shelled rebel positions on Wednesday, a day after Russian warplanes ended weeks of calm with a barrage of airstrikes.

Idlib is one of the "de-escalation" zones set up as a result of talks by Russia, Turkey and Iran past year as Damascus regained control of more of the country.

"The United States is closely monitoring the situation in Idlib province, Syria, where millions of innocent civilians are under threat of an imminent Assad regime attack, backed by Russian Federation and Iran", the White House statement reads.

Air raids across the province killed at least 13 civilians, including six children, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said.

Damascus and its main backer, Moscow, have vowed to root out the jihadist groups that dominate Idlib province. "We know that the Syrian armed forces are getting ready to solve this problem", Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, calling Idlib a "pocket of terrorism".

Erdoğan, as well as the presidents of Iran and Russian Federation, will meet on Friday in Tehran for a summit expected to focus on Idlib.

"Our cooperation with Russian Federation now is very important", he said.

Peskov said numerous "terrorists" are holed up in the country's last rebel stronghold, leading to a "general destabilisation of the situation".

A UN Security Council meeting is also set to be held the same day to discuss Idlib, US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has said.

On Tuesday, the White House released an official statement condemning the attacks on Idlib and threatened military force if "chemical weapons" are used. "We told them that this is wrong".

The US says it will respond "swiftly and appropriately" if Syrian President Bashar Assad uses chemical weapons "again", suggesting that Damascus was behind an April "attack" which Moscow says was entirely staged.

The Trump administration has twice launched airstrikes against Syria's government in response to the chemical weapons attacks.

Israel has fired more than 800 missiles and mortar shells at targets in Syrian territory over the past year and a half, according to the statement.
