Dallas officer arrested days after killing black man in his apartment

Dallas police chief U Renee Hall said on Saturday a warrant for manslaughter, which she said on Friday would be forthcoming, had not yet been issued because the Texas Rangers had asked her department to wait.

Officer Amber Guyger was arrested and booked into the Kaufman County Jail Sunday night for the killing of 26-year-old Botham Jean, ABC News Affiliate WFAA reported.

Guyger, who was in uniform, had ended her shift Thursday night and returned to what she believed was her apartment-which turned out to actually be Jean's home.

Guyger faced no charges following a May 12, 2017, incident in which police say she shot and wounded Uvaldo Perez after a struggle that resulted in Perez taking Guyger's stun gun, according to an affidavit reviewed by the Morning News.

Dallas officer Amber Guyger who fatally shot 26-year-old Botham Jean after mistaking his apartment for her own has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, according to the Texas Rangers.

"If there is probable cause that a crime has been committed in this jurisdiction, it is incumbent upon law enforcement, and in particular the district attorney's office, to issue a warrant for the arrest of the officer involved", family attorney Lee Merritt said following a vigil at Dallas West Church of Christ.

Guyger was involved in another shooting incident in May 2017, when a suspect took her taser, according to a Dallas Police Department news release.

'Right now, there are more questions than we have answers, ' Hall told a news conference.

Chief Hall said in the interest of being as transparent as possible, she has invited the Texas Rangers to take over the investigation.

The police department has been overwhelmed with calls from around the country about the shooting. Alongside photos of the young man grinning in a suit, and hanging out with his family, clinking glasses in a kitchen, Earl said it was the worst day of his life.

"The entire Harding family grieves today for the loss of Botham Jean, who has meant so very much to us".

He attended Harding University, a private Christian institution in Arkansas, and was a member of the Good News Singers and campus ministry.

Pastor Michael W. Waters leads a prayer following a Mothers Against Police Brutality candlelight vigil for Botham Jean at the Jack Evans Police Headquarters on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, in Dallas.

So, the officer broke into Botham's home and killed him?

I want to give you details of what we know so far and to clear up some inconsistencies that have already been reported.

She told authorities that she entered his apartment, which she thought was her own, and then shot the victim believing him to be an intruder. "If it was a white man would it have been different?"

On Friday, reporters pressed the police chief about the officer's mental state when she went inside the wrong apartment - was she tired, or under the influence? - but Hall didn't want to speculate.

She said she met Jean when she first moved into the South Side Flats in April. Such questions are being raised by Jean's family and attorney.

'You want to think it's fiction. and you have to grapple with the reality, ' he said.

Jean's mother, Allison Jean, wondered whether race could have been a factor.
