The book also claims Trump wanted to "kill" Syrian President Bashar al-Assad earlier this year after he defied the USA leader by again using chemical weapons.

Based on hours of interviews with second-hand sources, Mr Woodward claims that Jim Mattis, the secretary of defence, said the president had the understanding of a "fifth or sixth grader", reveals that Mr Trump failed a practice interview about the Russian Federation investigation - "Don't testify".

Woodward goes on in the excerpt to say that during a National Security Council meeting Jim Mattis got frustrated when Trump repeatedly asked him why the USA spends so much money on the Korean peninsula.

Woodward's book comes less than a month after former White House aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman published a tell-all account of her first year in the Trump administration, calling the president a "con" and a "racist".

In statements, Kelly called the book "another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump", while Mattis said the words attributed to him in the book were "never uttered by me or in my presence".

The president's tweet was part an aggressive effort by the White House to discredit Woodward's forthcoming book, Fear, which paints a harrowing portrait of the Trump presidency, based on in-depth interviews with administration officials and others.

"White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Whatever said that the book is 'nothing more than fabricated stories made by former, disgruntled employees told to make the president look bad, ' " Kimmel continued before adding his own commentary.

In the book, Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly is quoted as having doubted Trump's mental faculties, declaring during one meeting, "We're in Crazytown".

"In serving in this administration, the idea that I would show contempt for the elected commander in chief, President Trump, or tolerate disrespect to the office of the President from within our Department of Defense, is a product of someone's rich imagination", he added.

He also noted that Trump challenged his military generals for failing to win the war in Afghanistan and questioned the reasoning for deploying military forces in places like South Korea.

Trump, South Korean leader to meet at UN Trump suggests Woodward is a "Dem operative" MORE, are joining Kelly in refuting claims in the book.

"We're doing this in order to prevent World War III", Mattis advises the benighted president when explaining why the USA maintains a military presence in South Korea.

THE BOOK: Rudy Giuliani tried to defend the then-presidential candidate in 2016 shortly before Election Day after a recording leaked of Trump boasting of assaulting women.

On Amazon, Woodward's new book was ranked as the top-selling book on Tuesday.

Dowd said he would not address every "inaccurate statement" attributed to him but did deny that he had called Trump a liar or that he would end up in an orange jumpsuit.

He points out that Trump, in a profane matter, called condemning the white supremacist attacks in Charlottesville, Virginia, one of his biggest mistakes.

Mr Trump's erratic instincts and lack of curiosity about national security issues have alarmed senior foreign policy advisers, according to Mr Woodward's book. They want to destroy him. "I slept like a rock", the president said. Trump said. Woodward quotes Mattis as telling the president he would get right on that.

"Everything so far I've seen out of this book doesn't depict what's going on in the building behind me".

"He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything". Cohn stayed on until March, resigning shortly after Trump said the US would impose tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from a variety of countries. "I probably would have spoken to him if he'd called, if he'd gotten through".

Republican lawmakers appeared unnerved by the claims made from initial reviews of "Fear", but stopped short of criticizing Trump directly.

The book claims that Mattis told associates of the president that he had the understanding of "a fifth- or sixth-grader", according to The Washington Post. "Mr. President, I'm afraid I just can't help you".
