Feinstein says she referred letter concerning Kavanaugh to federal investigators

Instead of condemning the outrageous tactics of Judge Kavanaugh's opponents, and announcing their support for an objectively extraordinary nominee, Senators Manchin, Heitkamp, Donnelly, McCaskill, and Nelson are standing on the sidelines while Judge Kavanaugh's opponents resort to bribes, smears, and physical threats.

"I have honored that decision".

Kavanaugh wrote that he assumed the man who approached him "and touched my arm" during a break at the Senate Judiciary Committee proceedings had been one of the many protesters in the hearing room. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said that the letter in question has been referred to the FBI for investigation.

A Democratic senator said Thursday that she has "information" about Judge Brett Kavanaugh that she has referred to federal investigators, just a week before the U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote on his nomination to the Supreme Court. Eshoo then referred the letter to Feinstein. Feinstein (D-Calif.) informed her fellow committee Democrats about the letter Wednesday evening, the sources said.

The letter describes an alleged episode of sexual misconduct involving Brett Kavanaugh when he was in high school, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The woman rumored to be the subject of the information was contacted by BuzzFeed News, but declined to comment.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) told reporters that he is aware of the situation, but declined to comment until he saw the letter itself. Because Republicans hold a majority on the panel his nomination is expected to be sent to the full Senate late next week.

Sources added that Democrats feared that doing nothing would open them up to accusations of a cover-up.

The questions, mostly from Democrats, deal with abortion, executive power and personal finances - including how much he spends on tickets to see Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals. "There's no plan to change the committee's consideration of Judge Kavanaugh's nomination", he said. Susan Collins, R-Me., if Collins votes for Kavanaugh's confirmation "could be backfiring".

New documents released ahead of Thursday's hearing included Kavanaugh's 263-page written response to questions from senators, along with dozens of files from the judge's work in the George W. Bush White House that had been available to senators only on a "committee confidential basis". "She claimed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was launching an '11th hour attempt to delay" the confirmation.
