Former Sen. Jon Kyl to finish out John McCain's term

Sheri SchwartzSep 06, 2018

More recently, he guided Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, as he navigated meetings with senators.

"What's changed for me is the passing of John McCain", said Woods, who delivered a eulogy for the late senator last week. Jon Kyl to the Senate following GOP Sen.

Cindy McCain praised Kyl's selection, saying he was a friend of her family.

Kyl, a former Senate minority whip, was McCain's colleague and served in the Senate for 18 years until 2013. Jon Kyl has only committed to fill the Senate seat of the late John McCain through January of 2019.

Doug Ducey, a Republican, is set to name Kyl at a 10 a.m. PDT news conference at the Arizona Capitol.

"He has great judgment, an even keel, he's a team player, a true friend and an inspiring example of what a senator can and should be", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said of Kyl shortly before the swearing-in. Kyl's appointment will make it possible for him to vote for the nomination.

He served alongside McCain for almost two decades before retiring in 2013, and served as senate minority whip during his service, making him a key Republican leader.

We are all saddened by the circumstances that required this appointment and appreciate there was only one John McCain.

Kyl served four two-year terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before he was first elected to a six-year stint in the Senate in 1994.

By law, Ducey was required to appoint a Republican successor to fill McCain's seat, although he nearly certainly would have tapped a Republican regardless.

Voters in 2020 will get to decide who fills the remainder of McCain's seat through 2022.

Asked about those comments on Tuesday, Kyl said he stood by his criticism - albeit while appearing to compare Trump's aggressive posture to that of McCain's.

A source close to Ducey told NPR "there are weighty things transpiring in Congress and there is no one better to deal with them than Jon Kyl". "Kyl yet. What I have gotten is a commitment to serve Arizona through at least this session of Congress, and it's my hope that he serves longer", Ducey said, according to CNN. "I think he's his own worst enemy", Kyl said of Trump, adding that he "could be much more effective if he were more politic, more diplomatic".

McCain's wife Cindy McCain offered her congratulations to Kyl on Twitter. McCain had been absent in the eight months since, as he battled cancer at his home in Arizona.

Kyl's new stint in the Senate is not likely to last long.

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
