John Millman stuns Roger Federer in four sets at U.S. Open

Justin GreeneSep 04, 2018

Roger Federer lost to a player ranked outside of the top 50 for the first time at the US Open as Australia's John Millman stunned him to set up a quarter-final against Novak Djokovic.

But on the very same court on which Federer destroyed Hewitt 6-0 7-6 6-0 in the 2004 US Open final, Millman stared down the greatest player of the professional era to send the world No.2 crashing to his earliest grand slam defeat in nearly four years.

Still, this was a stunner.

Keys will next meet number 30 seed Carla Suarez Navarro, who handed Maria Sharapova her first loss in a night match at Flushing Meadows with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.

After a routine-looking first set the Australian took advantage of Federer's terrible first serve percentage to dictate the play and come back into the match.

From 40-15 up, Federer missed two set points and double faulted to allow Millman to convert a break point at the ninth time of asking.

The Serb endured a hard fourth-round match against Joao Sousa in testing daytime conditions in NY, but he got the job done in straight sets to await his great Swiss rival in the quarter-finals.

But he gave the break back in the next game after slamming an overhead into the bottom of the net on game point.

Keys, who has made at least the quarterfinals in three of the four Grand Slams this year, fired six aces and had no double faults to dispatch Cibulkova in short order. He started that 15-minute struggle by missing 18 of his initial 20 first serves. Nothing else.' Federer also believes that the 21-year-old Alexander Zverev will have huge success on the ATP Tour. I still don't feel old. "Sometimes, you just have to survive".

The last Japanese woman to reach the final eight in a Grand Slam had been Shinobu Asagoe at the 2004 U.S. Open.

Unseeded John Millman produced the performance of his career to end Roger Federer's interest in the 2018 US Open with a stunning 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) victory in the small hours at Flushing Meadows.

Nishikori missed this tournament past year and the Australian Open in January because of a wrist injury and dropped down to the second-tier Challenger Tour to begin his path back.
