Lawmakers come down hard on Google for skipping Senate hearing

Dorsey was to appear later before a House committee amid complaints from Republicans that social media companies have shown evidence of bias against conservatives.

"Twitter does not use political ideology to make any decisions, whether related to ranking content on our service or how we enforce our rules", Dorsey said in prepared remarks to a congressional hearing with U.S. technology giants.

Trump told the conservative news outlet in an interview conducted on Tuesday that "I think they already have" interfered in the November 6 election. "We haven't gone as deep as I would like just yet in understanding how we might apply this technology to Twitter but we have people thinking about it today". The report gave no other details. Through the use of copycat accounts and what researchers say are massive botnets, would-be fraudsters have sought to trick users into sending their coins to fictitious accounts.

"These are expensive investments, but that will not stop us because we know they are critical, she said".

Senate Intelligence has been looking into Russian efforts to influence us public opinion throughout Trump's presidency, after USA intelligence agencies concluded that Kremlin-backed entities sought to boost his chances of winning the White House in 2016. Shares of other tech companies, including Alphabet GOOGL.O and Snap SNAP.N , were also down.

Many senators expressed anger at Google for declining the committee's request to send a top executive to testify and was represented in the hearing room by an empty chair.

Republicans aired grievances against the social media company. Dorsey said that action was a mistake, which was corrected, and prompted an apology from Twitter.

While there will likely be some technical discussions during the testimony, Dorsey may face some tough questions from the House. Some Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have pushed the idea that Twitter is "shadow banning" some in the GOP because of the ways search results have appeared.

Republicans control majorities in both the Senate and House, but the House's approach to the election issue has been far more partisan than in the Senate. Google offered another executive instead, and the committee said no.

Sandberg, in her opening statement, said Russian interference, "violated the values of our company, and of the country we love", and emphasized that Facebook is increasing its staffing to identify malicious actors.

The news is the latest sign that the United States government, which has so far been reluctant to regulate internet companies, is scrutinising them more closely.
