Nintendo Switch Online service launches September 18

Switch Online is the Nintendo's unimaginatively-named subscription-based online service.

Nintendo plans to give more details about Nintendo Switch Online at an event tomorrow. 3, The Legend of Zelda and Mario Bros. - which will have online play for the first time, cloud saves (which won't work with every game because of cheaters) and various other special offers.

After the one-week trial, Nintendo Switch Online will cost players either $3.99/£3.49 monthly or $19.99/£17.99 annually. Nintendo Switch owners won't automatically become members when the service starts, so they will need to purchase an Individual or Family Membership in order to avoid disruption of their online play in compatible games. You can make use of a seven-day free trial by signing up on the Nintendo eShop starting September 18. The company then finally confirmed a specific launch date on Wednesday, stating in a tweet that more information about the online service will be revealed during a rescheduled Nintendo Direct stream on September 13th.

While Switch Online will rid of the ability to play online multiplayer games for free, Nintendo is assuring users that not all online features will require a subscription from September.
