Seattle Storm sweep Washington Mystics for WNBA Championship

Justin GreeneSep 14, 2018

Despite being on the brink of elimination in their first WNBA Finals appearance in franchise history, the Mystics remained cool and collected on the eve of Game 3.

The Mystics got out to a 4-0 lead with Kristi Toliver and Elena Delle Donne knocking down jump shots, while the Storm had back-to-back turnovers.

Stewart will go for a second World Cup gold later this month with the United States senior national team.

"We understand that we have to take care of the ball. Once we got Stewie and Jewell, we knew we'd get to the other side, but how do you know you're going to get to the other side this fast?" "I, unfortunately, wasn't able to practice a lot in the moments that we had off, so I was kind of trying to figure out my go-to moves as games were going on and just trying to get comfortable finding different ways". Though the floor of the arena, the home gym of George Mason University, boasts the imported red, white and blue signage of the Mystics, the 10,000 seats surrounding the court alternate from green to yellow - Storm-like colors.

"It doesn't feel real yet, honestly", WNBA Finals MVP Breanna Stewart said after the game.

But Stewart was fouled by Delle Donne while making a jump shot from the free-throw line on the next possession and converted the three-point play, sparking an 8-0 run to put Seattle back in control.

Stewart's 30 points in a 98-82 Storm romping over the Washington Mystics on Wednesday night gave Seattle a clean three-game sweep and its third WNBA Championship in franchise history.

Converting their 3-point attempts would be a big step in the right direction.

Aside from a narrow 75-73 win in Game 2, the Storm thoroughly dominated Washington in a lopsided series that began with a blowout 89-76 win in Game 1.

As for the Washington Mystics, this fantastic season comes to an end. "We're one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league". The love Seattle is showing them undoubtedly will make them hungry for more.

Lost in all of that Game 5 commotion was Stewart's strong performance, something that Bird said happens too often.

Bird now has her third WNBA 'chip, and her first since 2010. However, she was scoreless in the fourth quarter.

The answer came almost four months later with a championship. "Sue told us in the huddle that it wasn't going to be easy basically, and it was just how we reacted, how we countered that, and we knew - we got to this point for a reason, also, and it was Game 3 of the Finals, and we were going home with a championship".

Stewart scored 17 points to help Seattle take a 47-30 halftime lead. After years of work and planning and back-to-back No. 1 draft picks, the franchise had found a way to bring the trophy back to Seattle.
