Spy chief says Britain, allies will counter active Russian threat

Casey GreeneSep 10, 2018

Mr Fleming said the intelligence community had supported police in a "painstaking" and "highly complex" investigation into what happened after the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury on 4 March. "It was nearly certainly also approved outside the GRU at a senior level of the Russian state", she said.

Sue Hemming of the Crown Prosecution Service said the United Kingdom wouldn't ask Moscow to hand the men over because Russian law forbids extradition of its citizens.

The two suspects in the Salisbury nerve agent attack will be caught and prosecuted if they ever step out of Russian Federation, the home secretary has warned.

Britain produced an "unfounded and mendacious cocktail of facts" and is refusing to cooperate with Russia in investigating the poisoning "to unleash a disgusting anti-Russian hysteria and to involve other countries in this hysteria", Nebenzia said.

She is expected to speak to other leaders over the next few days as she seeks to forge an worldwide alliance for further action against Russian Federation.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova went on national television Wednesday evening, claiming that the security camera footage of the two suspects arriving at Gatwick Airport released by the British authorities has been doctored because it shows them at the same time in the same place.

Police also want to lay charges of using a chemical weapon contrary to the Chemical Weapons Act.

The leaders said the link to the Russian service - revealed on Wednesday - would strengthen their intention to work together against foreign spy networks, the use of chemical weapons, and to "defend ourselves from all forms of malign state activity directed against us and our societies".

London blamed the Russian state for the attack, but Moscow strongly denied any involvement.

"We can not account for the whereabouts of the bottle, nozzle or box between the attack on the Skripals on March 4 and when Charlie Rowley said he found it on Wednesday June 27".

The Daily Telegraph newspaper, citing an unnamed security source, said the two men had posed as businessmen to obtain their visas from the British consulate in Saint Petersburg.

While the Skripals were critically injured but ultimately survived the attack, two Salisbury locals who found the perfume bottle in June, Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley, were also badly injured.

She said that she does not know the men Britain suspects of being behind the poisoning.

Peskov also said Russia "has no reasons" to investigate the suspected Russian agents who were charged because Britain has not asked for legal assistance.

Secret intelligence service MI6 of Britain known the real names of agents of the GRU, which London was accused of the assassination of their former colleague Sergei Skripal in England.

Pierce said "they are progressing well".

Officers have formally linked the attack on the Skripals to events in nearby Amesbury when Dawn Sturgess, 44, and her partner Charlie Rowley, 45, were exposed to the same nerve agent.

Milan, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Geneva were all visited in the lead-up to the attack on Skripal.

In Russia, in turn, said that published the names and photographs of Russians allegedly involved in the incident in Salisbury, they did not say.

Speaking at an emotional news conference in Russia, Victoria Skripal said she was in touch with Skripal's daughter Yulia, but that the family had not heard from him for more than half a year.

Ms Sturgess, who died after being exposed to novichok, and Mr Rowley, were not targeted intentionally, May said, but rather were victims of "the reckless disposal of this agent".
