Before the funeral of Aretha Franklin got underway in Detroit, London paid its "Respect" with a performance by the Band of the Welsh Guards outside of Buckingham Palace.

The palace's famous changing of the guard took place just before Franklin's funeral was set to begin in the US - and the Band of the Welsh Guards, which provides music during the ceremony, took the moment to honor her.

Aretha Franklin is being laid to rest in Detroit, in a ceremony attended by legendary musicians and a former president.

Obama's letter honoring Franklin received a standing ovation from the funeral's attendees after Sharpton finished reading it.

Former presidents and preachers joined a parade of singers Friday in a hip-swaying, piano-pounding farewell to Aretha Franklin, remembering the Queen of Soul as a powerful force for musical and political change and a steadfast friend and family member.

"You know, the other Sunday on my show, I misspelled "Respect" and a lot of y'all corrected me", Sharpton said. "Now I want y'all to help me correct Donald Trump, to teach him what it means".

Bill Clinton described himself as an Aretha Franklin "groupie" whom he had loved since college days.

A statement from former President George W. Bush that was read to the crowd said Franklin would "continue to bring joy to millions for generations to come". "She worked for us".

The 25-year-old, who met Franklin several times, had fought back tears belting out the legend's classic ballad "You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman)" before sharing some happy memories of the diva with Jimmy Fallon.
