TIMELINE | How will Tropical Storm Gordon impact Arkansas?

Minnie NorrisSep 05, 2018

Gov. Bryant said Monday night that the declaration will make state resources and personnel available to areas affected by the storm.

Coastal areas from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana could experience 4-8 inches of rain, with isolated totals of 12 inches through late Thursday that could cause risky flash flooding and "life-threatening" storm surge, according to the hurricane center.

At 4pm United Kingdom time (10am local time) on Tuesday it was 145 miles east-southeast of the Mississippi River and moving northwest at 15mph.

In an 8 a.m. advisory, National Hurricane Center forecasters said the unexpected Labor Day storm should make landfall Tuesday night as a weak hurricane, somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and Louisiana.

The storm, which at 5 a.m. Tuesday had sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, is expected to bring "life-threatening" storm surges, which could raise waters up to 5 feet in some areas.

"We've got the pumps and power we believe we need, again, to be safe and to protect our residents", Cantrell said. City Hall and government offices will close Tuesday for nonessential employees. The rainy, cloudy conditions will keep temperatures in the high 80s for the rest of the week, he said.

A storm surge warning is in effect from Shell Beach, Louisiana, to Dauphin Island, Alabama.

At 5 p.m., the center of the system was about 95 miles southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi.

"We're asking people to do the same things that we're doing: prepare", said Mayor Andrew "FoFo" Gilich in a statement. "There's no reason to be alarmed". No flooding just yet and not expecting strong winds. A few questions remain on whether we could see some weekend rain as the remnants of the tropical system Gordon will be ending up somewhere in the middle of the US.

After a mostly quiet hurricane season, the tropics have sprung to life, but there's no reason for Beaufort County residents or visitors to panic, experts say.

Gordon's maximum sustained winds were 70 miles per hour (110 kilometers).

Gordon lashed South Florida with heavy rains and high winds Monday.
