Trump attacks Sessions, suggests DOJ hurt GOP in midterms

Casey GreeneSep 04, 2018

On Aug. 23, Republican Representative Duncan Hunter was indicted on charges that he and his wife used hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds to pay for vacations, video games and other personal expenses and filed false campaign finance reports, federal officials said. "Two easy wins now in doubt", Trump tweeted.

"Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now", Trump continued.

Investigators are never supposed to take into account the political affiliations of the people they investigate.

President Trump interrupted his Labor Day holiday to launch a raging mid-afternoon tweetstorm at Attorney General Jeff Sessions - apparently blaming him for last month's indictments of a pair of "very popular" GOP lawmakers.

"Good job Jeff." the tweet said, in part, also noting that the charges came just ahead of the mid-term elections. Both have proclaimed their innocence.

Trump stayed at the White House on Monday, watching television.

Mr Hunter has not exited his race, while Mr Collins ended his re-election bid days after his indictment.

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores declined to comment on Trump's tweets, which did not name the congressmen. Fox News has reached out to the White House for additional clarification, and the Justice Department did not immediately respond.

Also under investigation is Trump's conduct in dismissing Comey, particularly why he fired him and whether he pressured him to be generous to Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser.

The tension between Mr Trump and Mr Sessions boiled over recently with Mr Sessions punching back, saying that he and his department "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations".

"The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice - one for the majority party and one for the minority party".

The tweet marked Trump's latest attack on the Justice Department, which has a long history of carrying out investigations and pursuing indictments in a nonpartisan fashion.

Trump pointed to the popularity of the two men who faced an easy re-election before being indicted. "Instead of commenting on ongoing investigations and prosecutions, the job of the president of the United States is to defend the Constitution and protect the impartial administration of justice".

The president has repeatedly complained after Mr Sessions recused himself from the investigation into possible Russian collusion in 2017.

Still, Mr Sessions has made clear to associates that he has no intention of leaving his job voluntarily despite Mr Trump's constant criticism.
