Trump blasts Jeff Sessions and compares him to 'Lyin’ James Comey'

Casey GreeneSep 06, 2018

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions listens as President Donald Trump holds a cabinet meeting at the White House in Washington, U.S., August 16, 2018.

The president cited what he called "Obama era investigations" just before midterm elections and that "two easy wins now in doubt".

Trump was referring to the charges brought against Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) for allegedly using campaign money to pay for his family's personal expenses, including travel, dining out, his children's tuition, and more; and Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.), who has suspended his re-election campaign over insider trading allegations.

The remarks escalate recent charges of anti-conservative bias by President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers and followed Senate testimony by executives from Facebook and Twitter on foreign influence operations on social media.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the White House in Washington in 2017. Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Republican congressional leadership considered the charges serious enough to move to strip both men of their committee assignments.

With lawmakers like Graham, who is also a key Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, suggesting that the president is close to firing Sessions, and with Trump himself clearly appearing to be more and more frustrated with the attorney general as each day goes by, Sessions' firing seems imminent - nearly guaranteed.

For the president of the United States to say, 'don't prosecute Republicans, only prosecute democrats, ' - I was a prosecutor for eight years. "To say the Justice Department ought to punish his enemies and protect his friends goes beyond what any president in my memory has ever said, and that we can't normalize that". "Good Job Jeff", his tweet continued.

"So the justice system is under attack, and I'll be looking forward to statements from this nominee as a court of appeals judge, let alone nominee of the United States Supreme Court", he added shortly before confirmation hearings were set to begin for Kavanaugh.

Since Sessions' recusal, Trump has lashed out at him multiple times, blaming the attorney general for multiple offenses, including "being weak on Hillary Clinton" and the Russian Federation investigation. The Monday tweet makes this reality inarguable.

Trump recently told Bloomberg News that he would keep Sessions as attorney general until after the midterm elections. Trump did not have any public events Monday.

"The President's entitled to having an attorney general he has faith in, somebody that is qualified for the job...clearly, Attorney General Sessions doesn't have the confidence of the President", Graham said, according to CNN. Trump replied, "I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department".

Mr. President, Are you suggesting that members of Congress are above the law?
