Umpire’s pep talk to Kyrgios during match puts USTA in the dock

Justin GreeneSep 04, 2018

Kyrgios rallied and lost just six games thereafter to secure a victory that earned him a clash with 20-time grand slam champion Federer, who claimed a straight-sets win over Benoit Paire.

But all said and done, it looks like Lalyani's pep-talk did him good as Nick Kyrgios went on to win the match.

"I'm not sure if I'm the guy who's supposed to pull him to the side".

After the match, Kyrgios said Lahyani's actions had no effect on how he played.

"I am racking my brain to think of a situation requiring a chair umpire to speak like that to one player", Ings tweeted. "(I) may be enjoying NY a little less, but that gives me, you know, the credibility to play better".

"I don't know what he said".

Lahyani leaned over with hands on knees and spoke with the 30th-seeded Kyrgios, saying, among other things, "I want to help you".

John McEnroe has called for leniency from the US Open towards Mohamed Lahyani after the umpire controversially left his chair to give Nick Kyrgios a pep talk.

"I don't think he (the umpire) has to go down and take the position of a coach. I want to help you", Lahyani said.

But USTA chiefs have undertaken a "comprehensive review" of the chair umpire's behaviour and decided that he will avoid punishment, despite accepting that his actions went "beyond protocol". Down a set, and 0-2 down in the second, with a paying crowd watching on, he just couldn't be arsed.

Kyrgios, a 23-year-old Australian, has run into trouble in the past for not giving his all during matches, even drawing a fine and suspension from the ATP men's tour in 2016.

It was then that Lahyani climbed down from his chair at the changeover and advised Kyrgios to show more interest. "I get what he was trying to do".

Up next, Federer plays No. 30 seed Nick Kyrgios on Saturday.

'I haven't seen it, as I say.

"Everybody who knows Mohamed knows he's quite different from others".

Kyrgios described suggestions Lahyani could have been construed to be coaching him as "ridiculous" and added that he hoped the umpire would not face any sanction.

Tennis remains one of those sports that prides itself on a sense of decorum, but Ozzie Nick Kyrgios has never been much bothered with all of that.

Joao Sousa of Portugal led Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 2-0 when the No. 12 seed from Spain had to stop playing.

Similar to Federer, Sharapova has yet to drop a set, but that could easily change against the 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko, who can match the Russian's raw power from the baseline but is also prone to fits of inconsistency.

Thursday's freakish scenes prompted an outcry on social media, with the umpire criticised for his role in how events panned out.

"I mean, like, I don't have a coach".

Herbert, however, was scathing of the US Open as he released a statement lambasting the umpiring decision that took place. It was a conversation and conversations change mindsets.

"It's not the umpire's role to go down from the chair". He's won five titles at the U.S Open, although the last arrived a decade ago.
