US Open - Benoit Paire vs Roger Federer Preview & Prediction

Justin GreeneSep 04, 2018

Roger Federer has made light of energy-sapping conditions to brush past Yoshihito Nishioka in his opening match at the US Open while Novak Djokovic battled to a first-round win.

7-6 (7/3) victory in his first Grand Slam fourth round match scuppered a blockbuster quarter-final between Federer and two-time victor Novak Djokovic. The match lasted two hours and 18 minutes and Roger clinched a 7-5 6-1 7-5 win for the place in the final.

"Today he was definitely not at his best", Millman said of Federer. "(I) may be enjoying NY a little less, but that gives me, you know, the credibility to play better". Her second-round opponent is Czech qualifier Muchova, who beat Ukranian Dayana Yastremska in straight sets in her first-round match. Both could be on tap at the U.S. Open: Federer needed a few swigs of water on another steamy day at the Open and he played like a former champion set to uncork a celebratory bottle of bubbly.

Second seed Federer will play Australia's Nick Kyrgios in the third round.

Despite losing all six encounters with Federer, Paire will take heart from their most recent meeting in Halle earlier this year where he ran the Swiss great extremely close and even had two match points and he has spoken of how much confidence that has given him. Kyrgios, a 23-year-old Australian, did not appear to be putting forth much effort while dropping the first set and falling behind 3-0 in the second.

But he gave the break back in the next game after slamming an overhead into the bottom of the net on game point.

First, Kyrgios will need to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert, and Federer will need to get past Benoit Paire.

"Not a bad performance by any means by me", Federer said.

But he regained his composure to wrap up victory and continue his flawless first-round record at Flushing Meadows.

The U.S. Tennis Association says its medical team recommended the immediate implementation of the heat policy for the men, who will be allowed a 10-minute break between the third and fourth sets.

The first set saw no break points and Roger grabbed the breaker with a backhand victor that gave him a mini-break and an ace in the 12th point. Federer raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set as well as his dominance continued to grow more and more as the game progressed.

It was already 95 degrees (35 Celsius) when No. 24 seed Coco Vandeweghe took Court 17 for her match following No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova's victory.

Djokovic could face a quarterfinal matchup with Federer, the five-time champion who meets Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in a night match.
